The newest “in” Mexico vacation destination is the Riviera Nayarit, a 70-mile stretch of beach communities running north along Mexico’s Pacific coast, from just above Puerto Vallarta at Bucerias, past Sayulita and San Pancho, all the way to the sleepy fishing village of San Blas. There are now thousands of Mexico vacation rental villas to choose from on this fantastic coastline, renowned for its fabulous surfing, deep sea fishing, whale watching and eco-tours. The farther north you go, the more beautiful and isolated are the beaches, and Casa Colibri has a world-class surfing beach only 60 yards from your doorstep!

Punta el Custodio offers world-class bird watching. In the primeval mangrove swamps just a short boat ride up the estuary, you can view thousands of shore birds, ducks and raptors, from tiny sandpipers to herons that are four feet tall. When they are startled and take wing, the sky is briefly darkened by their numbers. Or you can book a guided bird watching trip into the nearby mountains to view rare upland species. Make sure to bring a good pair of binoculars: you'll need them!

Punta el Custodio seems suspended in time — a prehistoric place formed by the timeless rhythms of the sea, the squadrons of pelicans, the wind, the sun and the jungle. Yet it is part of Mexico, but not the glitzy, touristy Mexico of Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Acapulco and all those other high-density, smoggy resorts. Punta el Custodio is part of colorful, hospitable, joyful and religious Mexico, so do not neglect to visit the nearby towns and villages. They may have unpaved streets and no street lights, but the dirt roads are swept and watered down every day in a ritual of pride and cleanliness.

A few words of caution, however: Punta el Custodio is a tropical jungle: we have birds, bats, butterflies, iguanas, raccoons -- and bugs, particularly in the summer and fall. If you’re squeamish about living with nature, stick to a hotel room in Puerto Vallarta, with a view of supersize cruise ships, and shop with the cruise passengers at the Puerto Vallarta WalMart and Sam’s Club. You won’t feel as if you’ve left the USA, except for the heat. But if you are not squeamish, and want to experience the real Mexican Riviera, as it’s been for hundreds or even thousands of years, without the glitz and smog, come to Punta el Custodio.
